06.20 PICTURE OF THE MONTH

During this lockdown I’ve put all my time and energy into editing images that have been resting in my hard drives for far too long. I find it extremely refreshing and creative as I’ve finally found some time to study new software and experimenting with new editing techniques.

I am also focusing on my fine art print collection.
From now on I will periodically release new images to add to the store.
This month release is
"Emerging" - Adelie Penguin - Antarctica

Sometimes times of serious distress can have great social outcomes.
While the coronavirus pandemic demands physical distancing from one another, it is bringing people, families, neighbourhoods, provinces, and nations worldwide closer than ever before in an unprecedented global scale mobilization.

In every tragedy lies opportunity. Nobody would ever have imagined it possible to stop our economies. But here we are in almost a global lockdown.
Now it is time to reflect and learn.

In our self-isolation it’s time to re-discover the simple joys of life, like looking at the stars, feeling the wind on our skin, listening to nature and, most importantly, realizing that humans can’t be healthy in an unhealthy ecosystem.

We now know that humankind is able to act in unison for the global well-being.
Let’s hope that after CoVid-19 we will focus on relaunching our economies in a more sustainable way, addressing poverty, hunger, pollution and climate change as the foundations of a healthy future.

The last couple of months have been very exciting.
In December David and I explored warmer climates in Costa Rica.
And in January I spent the full month back in Antarctica.

“Separation” – Svalbard – Norway

“After a month in Svalbard, Norway, I’m back in the studio, going through thousands of images.

I look forward to sharing the images and stories behind them with you, through my website and social media.
“Separation” is among my favourite images. In April, while cruising along the ice edge of the frozen fjords, we witnessed a unique situation. During this time of year. love is in the air and the big males are in search of females. We spent two full days in the ice, observing this young bear being chased away from his mother by a big male who wanted to mate. It was heartbreaking to see the cub following his mother and trying to re-connect, while their courtship was going on. He never succeeded. It was time for him to find his own way in life…

“The Vole and the Cub” – Wapusk National Park – Manitoba – Canada

I just came back from a two-weeks assignment in polar bear country. This year was characterized by the unusual presence of hundreds of caribou in the denning area. The disturbance in the snow due to the caribou made it really difficult for the trackers to find the bears. I was still blessed with four beautiful encounters, though, one of which was quite unexpected.  An unwise vole decided to have a close look to the family! She escaped from the cub’s mouth, miraculously – only to be cough a few minutes later by mama’s unforgiving jaws.
